The Wall Street Journal

In July 1889, the Wall Street Journal was brought to life. From that day forward, the Journal has become a leading way in documenting the progress of different industries in America as well as across the globe. There has yet to be a time in history where the world has played witness to the dramatic and swift changes. WSJ has successfully reported the beginnings and ends of thousands of companies; the birth of newly created industries such as automobiles, space, oil and production; world wars and a great many other conflicts; intelligent designs in science and technology; revolutionary movements; the inclination of consumer economics within the United States and overseas; including the restless footslog of globalization.

The Journal provides a decisive source of information on trending news through the perspectives of corporate, finance, economics, and other global divisions that have contributed to shape the world and form an understanding of it. Their audience is all who either want or already have a job, career or even an ambition to seek money, achieve it and save it; individuals with a desire to play the role of an investor, employee, manager, or entrepreneur, just anyone who wants to genuinely pursue the knowledge of how exactly the world operates.

WSJ reports factual, informative data and not so much of proclamation or opinions. The newspaper believes that there is a complete separation between actual news and personal opinions. Their webpage provides exclusive coverage of news, with the initial goal of fracturing all major scoops within their main areas; in addition to deep dives into insights and analysis, including functional intelligence that is first read as well as the final word.

The Journal indeed has a sense of uniqueness along with trustworthy responsibilities as both a watchdog and custodian. From all over the globe, their coverage has been sought out in diverse, genuine voices with experiences as every story has a desire to express itself to a broader audience. They also share a major social purpose. Society seems to benefit from a multitude of a common source of combinable facts and a set of voices that bounce back onto the world, even through difficult times of stress and division.

Authoritarian Media

For starters, what I learned about media in a totalitarian government, such as China, is that the media is kept only in its region and isn’t really free press to outside media outlets in regards to their trending press coverage. In this post, I talked about a series of two different news stories from the South China Morning Post, a digital newspaper that gives readers a critical overview and analysis on the latest insights in China that matters to the world, and compared the similarities and differences of the original story to similar articles based on the same topic. As a quick heads up, there really wasn’t much difference as the articles covered the same viewpoints regarding the main points of the original news story. In fact, there were little to none topics based on the original context published or covered by any other online newspapers. In spite of this, here are a few examples that I have found:

Young Marriages in China

‘High-quality singlehood better than low-quality marriage’: woman’s choice to stay single inspires many and renews debate on China’s marital obsession

The pressure of young marriages has been a trending concern in mainland China, a dominant cultural standard that is becoming an issue. A single woman (36) in northeastern China, located in Dalian went viral from her personal opinionated comments regarding the issue in an online video, exposing China’s culture of young people getting married early. The trending comments spoke on her joys of being single as she rejected “low-quality marriage”, returning a discussion about cultural standards that are pressuring young Chinese males and females into getting married as soon as possible. The woman, who goes unnamed, also mentioned her single lifestyle, living alone and her preference to not be rushed into marriage just because of it, stating that it would be difficult to live a genuine marriage and happy life married to the wrong person just because marriage is expected to be part of the culture. She included that she would rather live independently and be happy, not believing that marriage is a “guaranteed utopia/sanctuary”. (SCMP)

'High-quality singlehood better than low-quality marriage': China woman's choice to stay single inspires many

The anonymous woman’s attitude towards marriage refers to the new age of women, where they are not dependent on men in marriage but now have the opportunity to find and create their own life to live. In the viral video, she stated that everyone, no matter what the circumstances are, has regrets. She expressed marriage as an offering of home and stability, but it also comes with a price of sacrificing an individual’s freedom whereas the singles may sustain total control of one’s life without being involved in a relationship. She stressed the most important thing is to ‘have fun in life’. The woman has encountered 270K views and nearly 30K comments. (AsiaOne)

Young Chinese Have Shunned Marriage. Now, They Want Singles’ Rights.

For young singles in China, there has been a creation of online communities like Huddling Group that have become an essential tool lately. The groups are not only providing emotional support for their members, but are also helping to defend and stand alongside their interests in a community that still supports married couples. Chinese singles are facing challenges because of their demographic differences with Chinese authorities that have branded single females that refuse to marry as “leftover women”.

To make matters even harder, the law within China is penalizing singles without a spouse, prohibiting child adoption, access to ART (assisted reproductive technologies), or in some cases, to claim maternity welfare. There are cities where singles are facing additional restrictions when purchasing a home. But despite that, the singles are stepping up to the plate to defend themselves against the odds that are restraining them from living a free, single life. Chinese singles are coming together, forming a strong foundation within online groups while encouraging a rising Chinese singles’ right movement that is growing in organization and ambition better than ever before. The community is changing values and pushing back, all while winning the public’s support. (SixthTone)

A General Overview

Each article alone talks about the same issue regarding young marriages in China and the chaos that it is causing to the younger generation. However, the original version along with its secondary source on AsiaOne talks about a particular woman whose public views on young marriage went viral, whereas the third one was an earlier version posted that talked more on the subject dealing with the perspectives of others rather than just one. There was no social posts other than one Twitter announcement regarding a newspaper.

 Lower vs Upper Class

‘Kneel or we’ll beat you to death’: elderly cleaner in China forced down on knees to apologise for accidentally sweeping rubbish onto luxury car

A male and female in China were filmed bullying a street cleaner by forcing him to apologize for sweeping litter onto their vehicle and threatening him. There have been earlier cases of low-income workers being wrongly targeted by the upper class in China, stirring up anger as more cases are being recorded and displayed publicly online. The video shows the couple forcing the elderly man to kneel and plead for forgiveness after he accidentally swept the waste onto their car. This occurred in eastern China in Zhejiang. The couple refused to give the man a chance to explain the situation, and instead demanded him to get in front of the vehicle, kneel, and apologize, threatening to beat him to death if he failed to comply. The man was too afraid to deny and did as he was told, which no doubt caused a flood of anger among the eight million viewers and the citizens of China. The company in which the poor man worked for had offered him support and went out of their way to track down the owner of the vehicle and have them apologize. (SCMP)
The woman from the previous incident was later penalized by traffic police for hundreds of Chinese yuan. This was not because of the assault, but for wearing a hat with a wide brim and high heels while driving. (AsiaOne)

General Overview

There wasn't much of a difference, same exact news telling but different interactive photos and images provided. For instance, the actual video of what happened can be seen on the original site on South China Morning Post. The story was shared in four Twitter tweets, though no comments were made on the posts.

Perspectives of 'Local' News

Granma, primarily known
as Cuba’s main news source, is an official newspaper of the Central Committee of Cuba’s Communist Party that was formed by merging two formal papers together, Revolución and Hoy on the 3rd of October in the year of 1965. The publication of Granma gives thought to the united force of revolution that has been steadily evolving ever since the victory of the Revolution.

Granma’s key objective is to transmit its written works of the Revolution’s principles and studies, the achievements of Cuban conquests, including both the purity and wholeness of their race while focusing on daily events within its society and the relations with international feed.

Granma is internationally user-friendly as its weekly publications are offered in many languages such as English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, German and Italian – also duplicated in Argentina, Brazil and Canada, extending its presence in over 65 countries. This is the same for the online version with daily updates of weekly international content to keep their readers up-to-date with what’s going on in the world outside of Cuban grounds.

Aside from its diverse languages in publications, Granma appears to offer much more by attaching news genres that are enlisted in further depth to give its readers a better insight of what’s happening within their categories, like Cuba, World, Sports, Culture, and Tourism. As an example of what may be offered on its homepage, here’s a brief listing of their top headlines:

Honor to the heroes who fought the fire

The article tells of the heroic actions of firefighters who many have lost their existence by serving in duty to put out a fire that occurred within Cuba in Matanzas at a fuel storage base. Those who survived the breakout were honored with medals permitted by presidential verdicts as well as the lost who will go forever remembered. (Granma)

One clear purpose: to generate electricity the country needs

Stationed in Gibara - a town in Cuba - an engineer known as José Luis Piferrer Martínez has links to wind farms in the area since the year of 2007 as a natural resource for renewable energy seems to be a necessity for achieving energy dominance. The article goes into deeper insights about his role as head of an operation and maintenance group of facilitating electricity generation, speaking on its beneficial impact on the country’s future. (Granma)

Reasons to vote Yes for the new Family Code

It appears that Cuba residents have a new law known as the Family Code that will be presented to a referendum on Sunday, 25th of September after going through consultation with more than 6,000,000 Cuban participants. (Granma)

The perspectives of Granma has similar aspects with the American newspapers in their choice of news categories, though their topics of news are completely different aside from their political aspects. USA Today is a primary example of an American digital newspaper that offers much more a mass variety in its news feed, branching out into different genres that go into a range of different sub categories of that particular type of theme whether in general news, sports, entertainment, life, money, tech, travel, and opinion, whereas Granma’s listings aren’t as broad and is focused more in the community of Cuban and its upbringings with only a single category that explores worldly news around the country.

USA Today has a large network that explores local and national media organizations in the country, with a brand that is accompanied by a flock of regional media distribution channels, giving an account of news stories and ethnic movements occurring over America and within our neighborhood. The editorial content of USA Today is all-encompassing and is also known as the sole voice of the nation. Their news articles are presented as easily readable and convenient, where you’re not hit with an overload of detailed information but focused on the importance of the topic.

What sets this press agency aside from any other is that it is adjoined with over 200 local digital properties covering up to 45 states, with the enlisting of 4,000 journalists who live up to their duties as reporters within those regions, supplying promising news feed that fully covers the entire nation on the USA Today’s media platform. Whether it’s the difference in the culture  or the importance of the news, whatever the case may be, the standpoint of news varies as well as their ideas of newsworthy stories. For instance, here’s a look at the top headlines from USA Today:

'A brazen scheme': 47 charged with siphoning $250M from COVID-19 child meal program

Federal charges were placed on 47 individuals who were all accused of what was described as a ‘brazen’ scheme of drawing a total of $250M from a relief program for the coronavirus pandemic originally created to aid children in Minnesota by supplying them with food. However, the money failed to feed the supposedly children in need as all finances went onto purchases of new vehicles, houses, jewelry, and much more. (USA Today)

Gov. DeSantis threatened to send migrants to Biden's Delaware home. It was a no-show.

There seems to be a contrast between the president, Joe Biden, and Florida governor, Ron DeSantis which has captivated the headline news and brought light to the president’s border strategies. A report on a plane’s arrival to the president’s birthplace in Delaware was said to be carrying migrants, which stirred up much chaos. However, both the migrants and the plane never came. (USA Today)

Liz Cheney: GOP House member referred to Trump as 'the orange Jesus' on Jan. 6

U.S. Representative Liz Cheney prepares for comments for her speech at the American Enterprise Institute where republicans assembled disapproval against the 2020 election outcomes. This also where she found fault with a few republicans who took sides with former president, Donald Trump subsequent to the discovery of classified material captured from his home by the FBI. Upon asking a staffer a simple question regarding some paperwork when another member appeared with a remark about Trump, calling him the ‘orange Jesus’. (USA Today)
